Banjos
are a relatively new addition to my production "line", but after
all that's where my heart has been for about 30 years, so I work on them
as seriously as I do on guitars and banjo bridges. And since banjos are
mostly "built" by putting together pre-made parts, it was only
obvious for me to focus on the neck as the part of a banjo that is actually
built from scratch, or almost. Hence my interest in building repro / conversion
necks for old banjo pots, both resonator models and openbacks. As for
the metal and wood components of the pot, I only use high-quality parts
from reputable sources, and since I know how picky banjo players can be
about their sound, I always discuss the choice of components with my customers.
I love old Gibson Mastertones (the late '20s through the '30s), and I think this shows in my resonator banjos, which can be called "masterclones" in all honesty. But I also love old openback banjos, since I was "born" a clawhammer banjo player first and a bluegrasser later, so I really like building openbacks, both with a standard 11" pot or with a 12" pot. This is a new part of my production, but it seems to gather consent, so I guess I'll have to expand it...
